The garden of Gethsemane was a place that Christ was accustomed to go to for rest and prayer with His disciples, but this garden also marks a place of suffering and loneliness. During this time Christ experienced great agony as He began to take on the offense of His people pressing Him into tremendous sadness. This experience of agony was accompanied by loneliness as the disciples abandoned Him in prayer in favor of sleep. Even now the people of Christ are prone to sleep when they should watch and pray, yet the cares and pleasures of this world often provoke the drowsiness of the church. Christ prayed that the Father might take this cup away if there be any other way to purchase the elect. But there was no other way to purchase the lives of drowsy sinners than by the cross. For those found in Christ, He drinks the cup of wrath on their behalf; however that same cup of wrath will come to the lips of all the wicked who reject the Savior.
