Thanks anyway Roger, I enjoyed reading that very illustrative passage of scripture. Another of my favourites.

The Word does

Exekiel 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith..

Sure Mike, I am after a simple explanation of what the verse is saying, that's all. Have a go, bro.

Well, ok then, perhaps you'd care to have a crack at it yourself. As I said, I'm only working on it at present, and it is already reaping a reward, as I feel a revival of spirit through meditating on it. But I've not yet arrived at conclusions, so do go ahead and tell me what you think.

Q77: Wherein do justification and sanctification differ?

God makes the holiness of His own nature the ground of His demand for holiness in His people: “For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:4).

The same fundamental principle is transferred to the Gospel, “But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of behavior; because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15,16).

Thus God plainly lets us know that His nature is such as, unless we be sanctified, there can be no intercourse between Him and us. “For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:45).

Without personal holiness the relationship cannot be maintained that He should be our God and we should be His people.

One tiny extract from Pink's ]]Doctrine of Sanctification

Pink clearly joins justification and sanctification as salvation, and though 'standing' cannot be improved, our 'state' must improve to evidence a lively and true faith.

Great article!

Q75: What is sanctification?

A75: Sanctification is a work of God's grace,
whereby they whom God hath, before the foundation of the world, chosen to be holy,
are in time, through the powerful operation of his Spirit[1] applying the death and resurrection of Christ unto them,[2] renewed in their whole man after the image of God;[3] having the seeds of repentance unto life, and all other saving graces, put into their hearts,[4] and those graces so stirred up, increased, and strengthened,[5] as that they more and more die unto sin, and rise unto newness of life.[6]

2] Rom 6:4-6
3] Eph 4:23-24
4] Acts 11:18; I John 3:9
5] Jude 1:20; Heb 6:11-12; Eph 3:16-19; Col. 1:10-11

This is an "either-or" question. There is no gray area between the two states of "sanctification" and "damned." Either the blood of Jesus is sufficient or it is not.

I also believe that free will and predestination are NOT mutually exclusive. Make of that what you will.

If we claim; "I am without sin." we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

If we claim; "I have not sinned." we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. 1 John 1:10

I think it is important that sanctification does not get confused with mortification.

Yes we do overcome now.

There are things that are being mortified in me but as to sanctification, I am set apart unto the Lord.
It is the very grace of God that thwarts the evil desires of my heart.
In fact the Grace of God is very active in that in times of weakness He prevents me from doing what I want to do in the flesh.
I thank God for His Grace and Mercy for without it I would be a damnable child of hell happily pursuing it's destructive end.

Thank you Tulipistheway and Christistheway for your quotes.

Concerning Sanctification in this life: Ch. 13. 3. In which war, although the remaining corruption for a time may much prevail,[a] yet, through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome;[b] and so the saints grow in grace,[c] perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Amen to that!

Let those who hold to Reformed Theology and yet, claim there is no overcoming of habitual sin in the life of a Believer, take note of their confession of faith.

Ch. 13.
2. This sanctification is throughout in the whole man,[a] yet imperfect in this life; there abideth still some remnants of corruption in every part,[b] whence ariseth a continual and irreconcilable war, the flesh lusting against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh.[c]

3. In which war, although the remaining corruption for a time may much prevail,[a] yet, through the continual supply of strength from the sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome;[b] and so the saints grow in grace,[c] perfecting holiness in the fear of God.[d]

Ask me a year ago and I would have said no. But I am now believing yes.
This change has come about in my understanding of the term sanctified and holy.

I am sanctified and holy unto God not because I am sinless but rather because I have been set aside for His purposes.

In Israel the temple was holy, the items used in the temple were holy.
These items were strictly for use only in relation to the service of God.

So to are Christians (not "christians" if you know what I mean.

We are a peculiar people set aside for the purposes of God.

No, I will not be sinless in my lifetime, but I have been set apart for the work of the Lord.

It was a legitimate question Jay, and an important issue in the church today.
I find Mr O'Clast's comments very helpful.

There are many who truly believe that holiness can be achieved in this life. I personally think they must begin with a wrong view of sin. But the Nazarene church teaches entire sanctification as a possibility in this life. I commend them on their efforts to live Christ-like lives, but worry about the inevitable disappointment.

Question - is it easy or difficult to sanctify yourself?

haven't been to this thread in a while. it is interesting the speculation about the position of person who posted the question. i posted it, and had no motive in posting it, nor was i trying to make a point. i was interested in what people thought, and figured just maybe i would be able to have a better understanding as comments came in.

the word 'entirely' was not meant to lean one way or the other, i thought it was a clear word, i guess not.

i apologize if this was a 'have you stopped beating your wife question' i do not think it was, but speculate away i guess.

Read John Murray on "Definitive Sanctification". The Reformers always said, "Justification once for all, Regeneration once for all, Sanctification for the rest of your life." That is way too shallow. The Spirit of God will not live in a corpse, so He regenerates you. He will not live in an enemy of the Father, so He justifies you. He will not live in a toilet, so He sanctifies you. You are given a new heart in regeneration, a new record in justification and a new life in sanctification. These are produced by Christ but applied by the Spirit. And throughout your life there is a continual outflow of these three in daily repentance, renewal and forgiveness.
You see these three introduced in Joshua, promised in Ezekiel, preached by Jesus and expounded by the Apostles.
No - there is no perfection in this life. But neither is sanctification a mountain you climb whose top you reach just before you die. We are totally and fully regenerated, justified and sanctified in Christ's death and resurrection. He made a complete propitiation for all our sins and all whom the Father chose He gave to Christ and He shall lose none but shall raise them up at the last day. Then they will also be glorified and experience the perfection promised to them and bought for them.
