I can communicate in English and American Sign Language.

When I was little I could communicate in Italian and Japanese, but, alas, I no longer remember them.

I can also ask for the check and the bathroom in German... but that's not really communicating, is it?

English because I was born in the United States. I also know some German because I took German in Junior High School. I also know a little Croatian because I am half Croatian and half Czech.

Maarten, go ahead and shame us! Because foreign languages usually require rote memorization, they have long been ignored in the primary grades, & inadequately covered in the upper ones. Memorization in general is deprecated by educational "experts" as too boring & useless etc. John Dewey, the patron saint of Progressive Education, popularized this declension from the classical model. He believed man has no brain, just motor reflexes, or something to that effect.

Also, you probably know English grammar better than most American high school grads. I learned more about parts of speech etc. in German class than in English (sorry, they didn't offer Dutch!). And this was at a reasonably decent high school in a college-oriented track (see, no "elitism" in our schools!).

Arthur worte:

"Only one i'm afraid - Scottish!! I can't even speak English - but you've noticed already, haven't you??

Ι καν'τ σπεακ Γρεεκ ατ αλλ.

Just an uneducated peasant i'm afraid!"

That's pretty funny Arthur! I see you know the phonetics of Greek, can you read Greek?

For those who may be wondering what Arthur wrote, which looks to be in Greek, is actually English using Greek letters. It reads,

Ι καν'τ σπεακ Γρεεκ ατ αλλ

I can't speak Greek at all.

If you grew-up in Brooklyn, NY during the late fifties and early sixties, as I did, you learned to communicate in Yiddish, German, Italian and in Irish. That was the flavor of the neighborhood. The trouble was, the communication wasn't very Christian.
