SERMON INFO
One of the constant themes of the New Testament canon is not to be deceived by heresy. Jesus said that fales teachers would come in his name to deceive the elect, if that were possible. Paul said that Satan changes himself into an angel of light in the variety of false teachers who had invaded the church. Peter warned against those who will “bring in destructive heresies.” John said that many antichrists are even now gone out into the world. And our text commands: do not be carried about by various and strange doctrines. In every age the church faces many heresies. Jesus said that broad is the way that leads to destruction. And the church faces new heresies, “strange” teachings. In my lifetime there have been the Moonies and the Scientologists. Just a few days ago, two Jehovah's Witnesses stopped by our house. The Mormons continue to grow. Heresies, in one way or another, always replace God's grace with human effort, the way the Pharisaical interpretation of the Law of Moses had done. But what is good is for the heart to be established by the grace of God brought in the blood of Christ. To obtain that grace, Christians are ready to follow Christ “outside the gate” where he was crucified and to lose if necessary even their old family and social ties.
