Probably sometime in the latter part of David's reign, David determined to build a temple for the Lord. Originally, Nathan the prophet confirmed David's desire, but, upon hearing a word from the Lord, he advised David differently. The substance of that message received from the Lord consists of what theologians call the Davidic Covenant. That covenant unfolds in two parts: promises fulfilled in David's life and promises fulfilled in David's seed after his death. Scripture leaves no doubt about who that seed of David was who would receive an eternal kingdom, as the angel Gabriel informed Mary that the child she carried would inherit the throne of his father David (Luke 1:32). This message explores the context and contours of this covenant and concludes with a series of applications about the relevance of this covenant for Christians.
