The third commandment envisions more than sanctified speech; it enjoins faithful and reverent interaction with God on every level in the whole orbit of life. Whereas the first commandment specified the only true object of faith and the second commandment specified the only true way of worship, the third commandment specifies the only true attitude we may have toward God and all that concerns Him or reveals Him. In all of life, we are associated with His name in covenant with Him. This commandment enjoins the fear of the Lord in the heart, shown forth in a consistent profession, an answerable life and the faithful pursuit of the glory of His name in all things.
We are reminded of our own guilt in breaking this law, of our need for salvation by grace, and our need to strive more faithfully to honor His name in all of life. |
