A debt is alternately described in scripture as both a financial obligation and a moral obligation. All men continue to acquire moral debts to God and to other men, and Jesus instructs his people to pray and ask God to forgive these debts. Confession in the Christian life is the daily continued acknowledgement the guilt of actual sin and the further acknowledgement of utter inability to satisfy that debt. In this prayer, we ask that God may of His free grace through the merits of Christ acquit us both of the guilt and punishment of sin, pardon our daily failings, and fill us with peace and joy. And, in the second part, we ask that God may make true the testimony of our willingness to forgive from the heart the offences of others. The ongoing plea for the forgiveness of sin is necessary to sanctification, and it is necessary to maintain the continued fellowship between saint and savior.
