The petition “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” is a request that God's revealed will may be done in us as His will is obeyed in heaven. In this prayer, we acknowledge that all men by nature are unable and unwilling to know and do the will of God but prone to rebel against His word and inclined to do the will of the flesh and the devil. We pray that God by his spirit take away the perversity of our hearts making us willing to know, do and submit to His will in all things in like manner as the angels do in heaven.
God's will is divided into two parts namely His secret will and His revealed will. In Deuteronomy 29 Moses teaches that the secret things belong to God, but the revealed things belong to you and your children. The secret will is that which can only be known in the course of providence as it is revealed in the course of history. The scripture teaches that in His secret will God has ordained whatsoever comes to pass. God has also revealed a will which encompasses those things that are to be obeyed as the rule of duty; however, men by nature are unable to obey this revealed will rather they are inclined to their own desires. We are asking that God would give us a proper frame of heart and mind such that when we walk in obedience we reflect the obedience of heaven.
