Chicken and egg. People get their economic news from the media, and the media constantly pumps out negative stories about the economy, so that shapes people's view of the economy. The media then polls them and figures out that their views are negative, and then turns around and reports this as another negative story about the economy.I find the media's view of the economy difficult to reconcile with reality. One NFL player gets $100M and the NFL is flourishing. If the economy was as bad as the media wants us to believe, wouldn't the NFL be affected even slightly? (At least if not actually cutting back, then not having record contracts for players, but holding the line.) If the media had not told me the economy was bad, just looking around where I live at the booming construction, I would think I was living in a boom time. Let's wait until after the Superbowl, college bowl season, and March madness and see if anything has been cut back this season. The worse the economy gets, the more money sports makes. |

After two decades of sending jobs overseas as quickly as possible, now we have chronic unemployment. The speech did not directly address the underlying problem. What's interesting is connecting the dots. The President called for increased taxes on corporations and the wealthy, and then wanted to extend unemployment benefits. We're perhaps closer to admitting there is a permanent underclass of people age 50+ who will probably never work again. Corporations which send jobs overseas are going to have to permanently subsidize the unemployment benefits for these people until they reach retirement age and qualify for social security. I see little in the speech about the long-term growth of middle-class jobs. I have looked for several years, but have been unable to find any growth sectors for jobs besides health care and retail. Where will future jobs come from? |

If you're wondering, the SBC's LifeWay stores are selling the NIV 2011. They're not putting their money where their mouths are, so the resolution is meaningless. |

If you know how to do it, you can game the web - or at least the search engines.A case study is Swami Kriyanana. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was mired in lawsuits about his sexual adventures and cult-like colony. These were all over the web. Since then, his organization has flooded the web with new sites that show up higher in the search engines than the articles from this time. They created sites for their organization, for him, for his music, for every book he's published, etc. They're sanitizing the web and rehabilitating his image as a wise teacher, harmless old man, and link to a divine avatar. Sure, you can still find the old information. But the people who game the web know most people never get beyond the first page of search engine results. |

Retail stores always have an excuse for low sales. If it's not the economy, it's the weather. Wal-Mart has less inventory in their stores than they used to. Of course sales are down, if you can't buy as many products as you used to. But they're not going to tell their shareholders that sales are down because Wal-Mart is contracting. The FT article is not available to the public. Only registered members of the site can view the text. Why did SermonAudio link to it? Here is a publicly available article: http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/earnings/2011-08-16-walmart_n.htm |

If you don't think America is in trouble, then you haven't read this:FCC promises 100,000 jobs through 'call centers' http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/08/04/fcc.jobs/index.html I have been studying job growth over the past 5-10 years, looking at many charts of what job sectors are going to be expanding, and this type of job is about all I see. There is a fundamental shift going on in the job market right now, and no one seems to "get" it. |

The reporter asks: "As customers, do you care" and I think the answer is an unambiguous, definite no.Zondervan and many (if not most) other Bible publishers outsource the printing of their Bibles to companies which do the printing in China. By purchasing these Bibles, a Christian is effectively supporting the repression of Christians in China since the profits from the printing are going to support the Chinese government. I think this is a much bigger issue than anything Rupert Murdock does. Yet Christians have ignored this issue. Even SermonAudio broadcasters won't touch it and ignore my pleas to cover the issue. I'm trying to raise awareness of it, but no one is listening. No one cares. Should Christians not be holding Bible publishers to a higher standard? Just about all Bible publishers are outsourcing printing to China now, so it's not like you can choose to support the publisher who doesn't do it. |
