"A Defense Of Calvinism" by C. H. Spurgeon

"The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach to-day, or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's gospel is my gospel. That which thundered through Scotland must thunder through England again."—C. H. Spurgeon

Tom Redwood,

I appreciate your efforts to defend the truth, but take my advise and don't waste your time on these trolls. They are sanctimonious know I all's.

"One can observe the effort by some to deliberately wear down people who hold specific views by engaging them in petty squabbles. This is related to Argumentum ad nauseum insofar as it is an attempt at domination by sapping disputers of energy to continue. On the Internet these people are often called trolls but in fact there have been public announcements by governments of the intention to hire such people to undermine political opponents."

From the article, I can deduce that this is a Judaizer attacking reformed doctrine, because there is nothing that they (and the Jesuites) fear more. But, I also wanted to learn what fallacy would be used to launch the attack. I think Oppenheimer summarizes it for me in the following statement
"Of course the one element conspicuously absent in this sort of theologizing is, well, the humanity of the human doing the theology. When I wrote my book, I made a conscious effort to show the seams in my thought. I wanted to be plain about the comedy of theology: I am human trying to make sense of God. I think there is big, objective truth out there, but I can only make sense of it subjectively, as a human trying to live faithfully in the cosmos of my Creator."

No problem John. Although it does seem that "Really" has a real problem.

BTW, I was quoting the lines to that Issac Watts him from a Spurgeon sermon that I had read. Have a great week end brother.

Wow! I'm so sorry . . . I meant to say "spiritually quickens, heals, corrects, and at the same time sweetly and powerfully bends it; that where carnal rebellion and resistance formerly prevailed, a ready and sincere spiritual obedience begins to reign; in which the true and spiritual restoration and freedom of our will consist" . . . instead of "compels" or the word force.

Luke 14:23-24 KJV
[23] And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. [24] For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

Sorry for the typos

'Twas the same love that
Spread the feast
That sweetly forced me in.
Else I had still refused to taste
And perish in my sin.

The love of God DOES compel us against our will,

'Twad the same love that
Spread the feast
That sweetly forced me in?
Else I had still refused to taste
And perish in my sin.

As far as doing goes man has that ability, but all he can DO by nature is SIN. All his works even that which you think is harmless is sin because man is altogether sin.

Proverbs 21:4 KJV
[4] An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

Mike from NY writes:

The issue is not the source of man's ability but what does he do with it. If you have been taught(have the ability) to drive an auto, is it then a requirement that you do so? Can you ever resist your ability by not driving?

R. K. responds,

The question is not ability to DO, the question is ability to repent and believe. That by nature man does not have the ability. That's why Jesus said John 3:3-4 KJV
[3] … Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

That means without regeneration the natural man does not have the ability to understand the things of the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV
[14] But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them , because they are spiritually discerned.

To some degree I agree with this. There is a Pentecostal prostitute (Proverbs 7) church on every street corner now, I don't want my tax money now supporting public schools to go to being used as a $&@? house for these false churches.
It's bad enough now with the Feds giving vouchers to RCC and Pentecostal church schools without accountability of where the money is going.

Without a proper understanding of Predestination and Election, one can not have the proper understanding of the grace of God.

Ephesians 1:4-6 KJV
[4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: [5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, [6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Really writes:
If the sinner is at enmity with God, enslaved to sin, and has the devil for his master, how do you suppose he will escape his condition to run to Christ for salvation? If you admit that without the Holy Spirit this cannot be done, then you have conceded the point. IOW though intellectually you say you do not believe in man's inability, practically you do. That at the end of the day is all that matters.

R. K. responds,

If the Holy Spirit is giving the ability, how do you turn that into man's ability? You are only affirming a disjoint in two opposing statements.

John 6:63-65 KJV
[63] It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. [64] But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. [65] And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

Liza J,

Again regardless of what sources "Really" recommends, there are Jesuit heretics that have infiltrated the ranks of every Protestant denomination. In addition, these heretics are prolific publishers, but their works can not be considered as representative of actual reformed doctrine. I assure you the reformers do not hold to a Presumptive Regeneration. We leave such heresies to the "real" Jesuits.

Really writes:

Because they have grace infused into them at their baby baptism and matters like repentance, faith and being born again are not for such blue blooded royals who have a part in the covenant of grace which guarantees their salvation.

Salvation by repentance, faith and being born again is a lowly way of salvation reserved only for us poor ignorant baptists.

R. K. responds,

Liza J.
If you want to know why reformed people make snide remarks, it is response to the lies written about us like that above. They make such comments as though they are experts in doctrines they have never studied in depth. At the same time they really don't know Baptist doctrine well enough to know the inconsistencies there.
