Thomas Manton (1620-1677) English Puritan commenting on Ephesians 5:19: “The learned observe, these are the express titles of David’s Psalms, mizmorim, tehillim, and Shirim, which the Septuagint translate, psalmoi, humnoi, and odai, ‘psalms, hymns, and songs,’ [and] seem to recommend to us the book of David’s Psalms.”

George Swinnock (1627-1673) English Puritan commenting on Colossians 3:16: “The Holy Ghost when he commandeth that the word should keep house with us, doth also enjoin us to ‘teach and admonish one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs.’ (which are the titles of David’s Psalms, and the known division of them, expressly answering to the Hebrew words, Shurim, Telhillim, and Mizinurim, by which his Psalms are distinguished and entitled, … ‘singing and making melody with grace in our hearts to the Lord,’ Col. 3:16, Eph. 5:19, Jam. 5:13.”

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
(Col 3:16)

Mizmorim: psalms, Tehillim: hymns, Shirim: spiritual songs.

"Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." Some have supposed, but without any proof or authority, that by the terms hymns and spiritual songs, in the above passages, we are to understand hymns of human composition. But it has been satisfactorily proved by eminent Hebrew scholars, and the most learned expositors of scripture, both ancient and modern, that the names psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, answer to the three Hebrew terms, viz: MIZMORIM, TEHILLIM, and SHIRIM. And be it observed, that these are the Hebrew names by which the Scripture Psalms are entitled and distinguished. The name of the book of psalms in the Hebrew is, SEPHER TEHILLIM, that is, the Book of hymns or Praises…”

Michael,

In the spirit of a brother I would disagree with your comments and do find contradictions in them and not coherent to the Scriptures.

You said,

"Not being a 5 Point Calvinist I do not define "Total Depravity" as total inability to respond to God, total inability to respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit but rather in terms of being totally wretched, a sinner, and TOTALLY UNABLE TO SAVE ONESELF, OR CHANGE TO BE HOLY, OR KEEP ONESELF SAVED."

I would like to graciously point out that "total inability" and "totally unable to save oneself" as you have termed are one and the same thing.

Epeshians 2:5

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, by (grace ye are saved)

Romans 3:10-11

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

Dwayne,

It is amazing that you accuse us of the reformed faith that we are illiterate yet you are so blind yourself and lack understanding of the Holy Scriptures.

Your errors begin from the first point for all have sinned including yourself. Therefore it is you that transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ. You deny Christ's doctrine of total depravity and call it heresy.

1John 1:8 states,

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

Read in the Bible how Christ dealt with the self-righteous Pharisees.

Matthew 9:11-13

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, ***Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?**** But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.***But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: FOR I AM NOT COME TO CALL THE RIGHTEOUS, BUT SINNERS TO REPENTANCE.***

I suppose you think the Pharisees went to heaven because externally they were so good and righteous and obeyed the law of God.

Christ also said,

"...Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools,..."

Dwayne,

Sanctification can apply two ways in the Scriptures:

1.In a Christian's life producing the fruits of the Spirit and being more conformed into the image of Christ,

and

2. An external influence. Read the Scripture below.

1 Corithians 7:14

"For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy."

Dwayne,

You said,

"I'm really lost here. What exactly are you talking about?? Sanctified EXTERNALLY?????? Isn't this just pagan or popish gibberish to avoid admitting that Hebrews 10 explicitly warns that the 'saved' can in fact, at any moment lose their salvation."

Call it what you will, to be sanctified does not necessarily mean salvation. The reason you are lost is because you are blind and carnal.

Dwayne,

Theresa who was a women and not a mother was a sinner and thought her righteousness and good works would save her soul. The Scriptures say all our righteousnesses are as fithy rags.

Dwayne,

Why can't hypocrites, tares, and goats be sanctified by the blood of the covenant? They are amongst us in the church and they are sanctified externally by the means of grace and ordinances that have been given to the true people of God and made available through the blood of the covenant which Christ did shed.

con't to Dwayne,

You also quoted Peter in 2Peter 2:19-22

"While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire."

Peter is speaking to false prophets like yourself.
2 Peter 2:1

"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction."

Dwayne Mayor,

Hebrews 10:26-31

"For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

These verses truly expose the hypocrites, the wheat from the tares and the sheep from the goats. As the Scriptures say.

Matthew 7:15-17

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Discerned Believer,

You said,

"If every action of man, whether it be good or evil is "predetermined" by God, then who made Adam sin?"

Satan and Adam himself in the weakness of his flesh sinned. Although Adam was perfect before the fall it is obvious that he was capable of sinning.

Freewiller,

Did you know Abraham lied? God said no liers will enter into the kingdom of God, but yet he is called righteous. Why? Noah was found to be drunk but the Bible says no drunkard will enter the kingdom of God. Yet in the NT, Paul says, "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith." Hebrews 11:7

Freewiller,

Then no one is saved including yourself and God is not gracious and pleased to save some according to your beliefs.

The Scriptures declare all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. You are a sinner Freewiller born and shapen in iniquity and totally depraved and corrupt as every single human being is.

Any righteousness you may have are filthly rags and not accepted by God. Your righteousness, good works and self induced overcoming will send you to hell.

Your beliefs contradict the Scriptures and do not coincide with biblical doctrines and true holiness. You neglect the doctrines of grace, predestination, election, redemption, justification, sanctification, glorification etc... You do miss so much.

Freewiller,

You said,

"I'm tired of arguing just to argue and Bible says after second admonition to quit. Believe whatever you want. I've already stated my position. Go ahead and sin your way to Heaven, keep on castigating those say we must be overcomers."

If you are tired of arguing stop arguing against the truth then. BTW, no sinners will enter the kingdon of God only sinners saved by grace and cloaked with Christ's righteosness, justified, sanctified and glorified.

Freewiller,

These biblical accounts you mentioned do show God's longsuffering, but in them we see the weakness and sinfulness of men and the glory of God and His all sufficient strength, justice and saving grace. It is not that God is frustrated, it is that He is gracious and should have sent us sinful wretches to hell a long time ago where we deserve.

Freewiller,

The dispute is free will vs. God's will in salvation. Free will is clearly not supported in the Scriptures and no one can save themselves to gain access to heaven, no matter how sinful or obedient and righteous they are.
