The word ‘love’ is used often without the recognition that there are various categories of love. In the Greek language of the first century A.D. there were at least three terms that would be translated by the English word ‘love.’ When Jesus asked Peter, ‘Do you love Me?’ He used a term that means respect and reverence. But this was not as affectionate a term as Peter thought Jesus should use to describe his love for Him so Peter responded with a term that means ‘affection.’ A third family of terms that is never used in the New Testament but is used both positively and negatively in the Greek translation of the Old Testament means a longing. We are told to love wisdom by longing for it in Proverbs 4:6. All of these terms ought to describe our love for the Lord.
