This Psalm focuses upon the perfections of God's word and the blessings that come through it. The word of God takes precedence in the life of faith, even in the Old Testament. The second stanza of Psalm 119 gives us a fair representation of this enormous Psalm, and urges us to a greater love for God's word.
Synonyms for Scripture In this Psalm, many synonyms are used to refer to God's word. Each contributes to our overall understanding of what Scripture is. Commandments: This term emphasizes the right of authority. Statutes: This term emphasizes the permanence and binding force of Scripture. Judgments: This term refers to the laws that govern human interaction. Precepts: This word envisions the pastoral oversight of God through His Word.
The Antidote for Sin (vs. 9-11) These verses see the word of God as the sanctifying antidote to the sinful condition of man. The young especially are called to take notice of this point. The pursuit of God must be wholehearted. The heart that pursues Him is growing in sanctity through the knowledge of His word.
The Pathway of Joy (v. 12-16) Our desire to be in the word must be matched by our resolve to declare it. There is joy in knowing and doing God's word. We must be resolved to fill our minds with it, to purposefully delight in it, and not to forget it.
